At a quarter acre, you still finish comfortably on cordless power — but only if you buy enough watt-hours up front. Miscalculate here and you’ll be that neighbor recharging a battery at 80 percent done.

The assumptions, stated up front
Every number below rests on four planning assumptions. Change any of them and the math shifts a little; none of them changes the conclusions.
- A ¼-acre lot is 10,890 sq ft (an acre being 43,560). We budget about 70 percent mowable turf — roughly 7,600 sq ft — because your house, driveway, and beds don’t grow grass.
- Effective stripe = deck width minus 1 inch. Overlapping each pass by about an inch is how you avoid scalp lines, so a 21-inch deck actually covers 20 inches of new grass per pass.

The pass math at 21 inches
Pass count depends on the width of your lawn — you make one pass per stripe. Since quarter-acre lots come in every shape, here’s the honest table rather than a single fake number:

Two things fall out of that table. First, the often-quoted “about 18–20 passes” is only true of a narrow 30-foot-wide lawn — measure your own width and multiply by 12, then divide by your deck’s effective stripe. Second, and more useful: total walking distance doesn’t depend on shape at all. Turf area ÷ effective stripe = distance walked, which for 7,600 sq ft at a 20-inch stripe is about 4,560 linear feet — roughly 0.85 miles per cut, plus turns. The watt-hour budget for a quarter acre
Energy demand is where quarter-acre buyers get burned, because “runs 45 minutes” on the box doesn’t say what kind of grass those minutes contained. The Wh framework does:

A single 336–420 Wh pack (EGO 6.0 or 7.5Ah) clears the whole budget with margin. Two 240 Wh-class packs clear it in most conditions. One small 4.0Ah 40V pack (144–160 Wh) does not — that’s a small-yard configuration, and it’s why the cheapest kits are a false economy at this size.

One battery or two? The actual decision
This is the quarter-acre question, so let’s make it explicit rather than leaving it to a spec sheet.
The case for one big battery (336–560 Wh). Simpler mental model — you mow until done, always.
