An acre is the frontier of walk-behind battery mowing. Everything that was merely “worth planning for” at half an acre becomes mandatory here: two batteries minimum, self-propel non-negotiable, and a charger that keeps up while you mow. Plenty of owners do this every week and enjoy it. Plenty more bought one battery, discovered mid-July what an acre actually demands, and now have opinions.

The time budget: this is a lot of walking
Start with the number no spec sheet will tell you. One acre of lot is 43,560 sq ft; at our 70-percent-turf planning figure, that’s about 30,500 sq ft of actual grass. Divide by a 21-inch deck’s effective 20-inch stripe and you get roughly 18,300 linear feet of mowing — about 3.4 miles, before accounting for the hundred-plus turns.
At a self-propelled effective pace of 0.4–0.5 acre per hour, the clock says 80–100+ minutes per full cut. In practice, add hydration stops, the tree circles, the trimming afterward, and you’re budgeting a solid two-hour block of your Saturday.
None of this is an argument against battery power — a gas walk-behind imposes the identical walk. It’s an argument for knowing what you’re signing up for, and for reading the robot-mower section below before you buy your third battery. The walkers among us genuinely enjoy the two hours; if that’s not you, the math in this page will point you somewhere better.
The watt-hour budget for one acre
Same method as every page in this cluster, same labeled assumptions: real lawns with a self-propelled mower consume roughly 25–35 Wh per 1,000 sq ft in weekly growth (our estimate — deliberately conservative versus manufacturer “up to” runtime claims).

So an acre is unambiguously a multi-battery job — a single-pack acre is only possible in the lightest case on the biggest battery, and no honest spec sheet should tell you otherwise. Battery strategies that actually work at an acre
Since no single pack covers the job, the question becomes which portfolio of packs does — and how they cycle while you mow. These are the configurations that pass the math:

Two patterns are worth naming. High-Wh concentration (two 640 Wh packs) means one mid-cut swap and long, predictable cycles. More, smaller packs (three 420s) means swapping more often but never caring whether one is charged, and every pack doubling as tool-system fuel. Both work; what doesn’t work is arriving at an acre with a single battery of any size and hoping.
And the charging choreography matters as much as the count: at an acre you want at least one fast charger running while you mow, so pack #1 is full again by the time pack #2 is empty. Check the charger that ships with your kit — the slow ones can take most of a mowing session to refill a big pack.

Here is the honest framing this page exists for. A cordless walk-behind at one acre means 3.4 miles and roughly two hours, weekly, April through October. That is either:
- A feature. It’s exercise you’d otherwise drive to; it’s quiet, it’s meditative, and modern self-propelled mowers do the propelling. If this is you, the configurations above work and the rest of this page is your shopping list.
- A bug. If the walk is a chore to eliminate rather than a ritual to protect, no battery purchase fixes it — you’d just be spending flagship money to keep doing the thing you hate. Skip to the next section, because at an acre the hands-off option finally makes economic sense.
There’s a third, smaller group that should hear this too: if walking the acre is medically off the table, the right answer is not a bigger battery. It’s the section below — or, if you want to stay seated, this acreage is where small electric riding platforms start to be defensible. Where robot mowers start making sense
Below a half acre, a robot mower is a luxury — nice, but competing against a 25-minute job. At a full acre, the math genuinely flips:
- The walk-behind costs a top-band mower plus 2–3 big battery packs, then two hours of your week, every week, for the life of the machine.
- The robot costs a higher price band up front, then zero hours.
