Three numbers decide your mower

Most mower shopping advice starts with brands. It should start with a tape measure, because yard size quietly decides nearly every spec that matters on a cordless mower — and getting it wrong in either direction costs you money. Buy too little mower and you end up recharging mid-cut every Saturday. Buy too much and you’ve paid flagship money, and you’re storing an 80-pound machine, to trim 3,000 square feet of grass.

The first number is deck width. A wider deck does not just cut more grass per pass — it cuts your total walking distance down proportionally. A 21-inch deck mowing a quarter-acre lawn walks roughly 25 percent less ground than a 17-inch deck over the same area, because every extra inch of stripe removes a whole pass. But decks cut both ways: a 21-inch steel deck is heavy and awkward in a yard with gates, tight side yards, and flowerbed corners, while a 13-inch deck stores on a shelf.

The second number is watt-hours. Volts × amp-hours = watt-hours (Wh), and Wh is the real energy budget for a cut — not the “up to X minutes” line on the box, which is measured in short, dry, ideal grass. As a planning number, a real lawn with weekly growth consumes roughly 25–35 Wh per 1,000 sq ft with a self-propelled mower (our estimate; see volts vs amp-hours explained). That turns yard size directly into a battery requirement: a small city yard needs around 100–150 Wh per cut, a half-acre needs 380–530, and a full acre needs close to a kilowatt-hour.

The third number is propulsion. Pushing a mower is fine for ten minutes and miserable for fifty. Self-propel buys back the effort, but it taxes the battery — figure roughly 20–30 percent more energy per cut (an estimate, but a consistent one across owner reports). That’s why our yard-size recommendations treat self-propel as a switch that flips on somewhere around a quarter acre, and why every yard page below shows the Wh math both ways.

  • Small yards — under ¼ acre. The math says one battery is genuinely enough, which means the money you don’t spend on a flagship can go to a matched trimmer and blower instead.
  • Quarter acre. The pivot point: 20–30 minutes of mowing, roughly 200–270 Wh per cut, and a real one-battery-or-two decision.
