Yard size is the single most important input in choosing a cordless mower — more than brand, voltage, or budget. A mower with too little energy budget dies half-cut; a deck too big for a tiny lawn is money and garage space wasted. This calculator turns your lawn’s numbers into the three decisions that actually matter: deck size, propulsion type, and battery energy.

How to measure your lawn

Any of these works, in increasing order of effort:

  • Pace it off. An adult stride is roughly 2.5 ft. Length × width of the mowable area (skip the house, the beds, the patio) in feet, multiplied together, gives square feet. The calculator accepts length × width directly.
  • Read it off your property documents. Lot size is on your deed or county assessor’s page — then subtract a rough estimate for house, driveway, and beds. A typical house + landscaping footprint on a quarter-acre lot leaves about 5,000–6,500 sq ft of actual grass.
  • Eyeball it against the reference below. Lawns are bigger than they feel — that’s the point of the diagram:

What the answers mean

  • Suggested deck — the cutting width that finishes your lawn in a sensible number of passes without being unwieldy. Bigger isn’t automatically better: on small lawns, a wide deck spends more time maneuvering than cutting.
  • Mower class — whether push is realistic or self-propelled earns its price. Slopes, thick grass, and roughly a fifth of an acre or more all push the answer toward self-propelled.
  • Energy budget — the watt-hours (Wh) a mowing session should carry to finish on one (or two) charges. For reference: a 56 V 5.0 Ah pack holds 280 Wh; a 40 V 6.0 Ah pack holds 240 Wh. The per-battery figure tells you what size packs you’d want.

How the estimate works

The math is deliberately simple so you can recreate it: a baseline of 16 Wh per 1,000 sq ft for normal grass on flat ground with a self-propelled mower, adjusted up for thick or wet grass (×1.4) and slopes (up to ×1.3), down for light grass (×0.8) and push mowers (×0.9). Limitations (honest ones)

This is a planning estimate, not gospel. It assumes grass at typical mowing height — let it go two extra weeks in a wet spring and energy use jumps. It doesn’t know about your obstacles, your dog’s favorite path, or that battery from 2019 that’s quietly lost 20% of its capacity.
