The assumptions, all labeled as estimates:
- One unit “U” = the price class of a solid mid-range cordless walk-behind kit with battery included — the $$ band. A planning placeholder for the math, not a quote of any product’s price.
- Five-year ownership horizon. Walk-behind packs are typically rated around 300–500 charge cycles, which works out to roughly five to seven mowing seasons at one to two charges per week — so five years is fair. Robot makers don’t publish lifespan figures; we assume five years for symmetry and flag this as the softest assumption on the page.
- Robot purchase ≈ 1.5U–4U depending on class — an observation across current US listing tiers (compact vs flagship AWD machines), matching our site-wide bands of $$$ for compact robots up to $$$$+ for flagships. Not a quote.
- Consumables: blades are minor for both (robot razor blades are cheap and swapped often; walk-behind blades yearly). Electricity is a rounding error for both: the LUBA 2’s listed 21.6V 12Ah pack is about 260 Wh, so a whole season of robot charging costs about as much as a couple of lawn-tool accessories; a walk-behind’s weekly charge is even less.
- Ignored on purpose: resale value and out-of-warranty repair costs (robot repair pricing isn’t published — an honest gap), plus the value of your own labor. Labor gets its own section.

Read the punchline carefully: a compact robot and a good walk-behind cost about the same per year on paper. The flagship robot’s premium — roughly half a walk-behind kit per year on this estimate — buys exactly two things: your mowing time and the ability to handle steep, big, or multi-zone property. If neither applies to you, that premium buys nothing you’ll notice.
The time budget: where robots actually win
Cost per year quietly treats your Saturday as free. It isn’t. Here’s the estimate for a half acre (about 21,800 sq ft of turf), mowed weekly over an eight-month season — the same turf math our ½-acre guide uses for walk-behind runtime:

That’s a difference of more than 30 hours per season — a full workweek you get back, every year, for as long as you own the machine. Only you can price your own Saturday morning, but it explains why owners of half-acre-plus lawns rarely go back after the first season. Yard complexity: the framework that decides it
Walk-behinds are complexity-agnostic — slope, trees, fences, and beds change nothing about how a push mower works. Robots care about all three. Score your yard honestly:

- Tree canopy: heavy shade degrades RTK satellite positioning; the LiDAR-equipped machines (LUBA 3, ECOVACS Goat A2000, Dreame A3) are built for exactly this. A walk-behind doesn’t notice the sky at all.
- Zones and obstacles: front-plus-back lawns, fence gaps, and dense beds favor robots with published multi-zone capacity and vision obstacle avoidance — but the more complex the lot, the further up the price ladder you climb (see the best-by-acreage guide).
- Rough or unmaintained edges: no residential robot here is a brush cutter. If part of your “lawn” is really meadow, that section stays a walk-behind or trimmer job.
Notice the pattern: complexity is the robot’s biggest cost driver and its biggest selling point at the same time. A simple, flat, small lawn is the one place a cheap walk-behind is nearly unbeatable; a steep, shaded, multi-zone acre is the one place a flagship robot justifies its price.
Cut quality: the honest section
Robots mow in a way walk-behinds can’t, and can’t mow in a way walk-behinds can. Both halves matter.
What robots do better: they mow several times a week, trimming a few millimeters per pass and mulching clippings finely into the turf. Frequent light cuts feed the soil, and established-robot owners generally report thicker, healthier-looking grass (owner-reported sentiment, not a lab finding). There’s no bag to empty because there’s barely anything to bag.
What robots do worse:
- No stripes. The fine-mulch finish is even but flat; a walk-behind is the tool for a striped lawn.
- Recovery cuts. Return from two weeks away and the robot nibbles at growth beyond its micro-cut range; a walk-behind takes tall grass down in one pass. If your schedule is irregular, this bites.
- Leaves. Heavy autumn leaf-fall still needs a rake, a blower, or a bagging session — robots don’t collect.

If one pattern dominates, it’s this: the hybrid contract is the norm. In 11 of the 16 threads we read, owners who genuinely love their robots still keep the walk-behind, the trimmer, or the blower for edges, recovery cuts, and fall cleanup — the robot takes the routine, the human takes the detail.
