  2. Fix your worst slope. Measure the steepest stretch of grass you’ll actually mow. Under 45%: any AWD unit above clears it; 45–80%: you need the LUBA/X430/Dreame class; above that, no machine here is rated for it.

  4. Count your zones. Front plus back plus side lawn on one machine? Confirm the zone count in the table above before you shortlist.
  5. Check the quiet spec. Robots mow while you’re doing other things; if it runs near a patio or bedroom window, the dB(A) figure matters more than any feature.

Do wire-free robot mowers need any boundary wire at all?

No — every model on this page maps and fences your lawn virtually via app. You place a charging station and (on RTK models) a small antenna with a clear view of the sky; no perimeter wire is buried or pegged.

What happens if the robot can't get an RTK signal under my trees?

RTK correction degrades under dense canopy, which is why the stronger machines fuse a second system: vision (Navimow, LUBA 2) or LiDAR (LUBA 3, Goat A2000, Dreame A3). If most of your lawn is heavily shaded, a LiDAR-first machine is the safer purchase.

Can one robot mower handle front and back lawns separated by the house?

Yes, on the multi-zone models above — you map each zone in the app and the machine schedules and travels between them. Zone capacity varies (10–30 zones on current listings), so count your actual areas before buying.

How steep is too steep for a robot mower?

Stay within the listing’s slope rating: 45% on the Navimow i-series AWD, 80% on Mammotion LUBA and Dreame A3 AWD machines, 84% on the Navimow X430. Steeper than the rating means skipped patches, traction loss, and tire damage to the lawn.

Are robot mowers safe around children and pets?

Current machines use vision and/or LiDAR obstacle avoidance, lift and tilt sensors, and blade-stop behavior, but no robot replaces supervision. Keep small children and pets out of the work area while it mows, and pick up small objects the sensors can’t classify.

Do robot mowers actually cut well, or just mulch everything?

They mulch — frequently. Frequent fine clippings feed the lawn and eliminate bagging, which most owners come to prefer. Expect honest limitations: leaf-heavy falls still need raking, and occasional striping or missed edges may need a trimmer pass.
