For twenty years, owning a robot mower started with a shovel: you buried a boundary wire around the lawn, every bed, every obstacle. Break it and the robot sat idle until you found the break — the product’s weakest part and its most common complaint.

The current generation does away with all of it. Map the lawn in an app, set a virtual boundary, and the mower navigates by satellite correction (RTK), laser scanning (LiDAR), onboard cameras, or — on most machines worth buying — a combination of all three. That’s the wire-free upgrade: no perimeter wire, no random bouncing, and a lawn mowed several times a week without you touching a handle.

Robots are sold by acreage — start there

Walk-behinds are sold by deck size and voltage; robots by rated coverage — often right in the model name. Choose by grass area, not lot size (the house, driveway, and beds don’t need mowing):

The navigation-tech primer

Four technologies decide how well a wire-free robot knows where it is:

  • RTK (satellite correction). A small base-station antenna corrects the mower’s GPS position to centimeter-level accuracy. Excellent under open sky; heavy canopy can shadow the signal.
  • Vision. Cameras plus AI recognition. The mower sees grass edges and obstacles and classifies what they are. Performance depends on light.
  • LiDAR. Spinning laser scanning that builds a 3D picture of the yard. Works in darkness, ignores tree cover — the strongest option for obstacle-dense lawns, at a premium.
  • Boundary wire. The legacy method: accurate but a pain to install and the most common failure point. We cover wire-free machines only.

Expect a few line items new owners miss: an RTK antenna that needs a clear patch of sky, regular blade swaps, and on some models an optional 4G module.
